What should I do when someone dies?
The first steps depend on where the death occurred. See our guidance on death at home, in hospital, in a care home, unexpected death, or death away from home. You can call us for calm advice at any stage.
When should I contact a funeral director?
As soon as you feel ready for guidance. You do not need to have paperwork complete before speaking with us.
Can I choose J Waite & Son if the person dies in hospital?
Yes. Tell the hospital bereavement team that you wish to use J Waite & Son and we will take things forward from there.
Can we arrange a burial?
Yes. We arrange burials including new graves, existing family graves and graveside services.
Can we arrange a cremation?
Yes. We arrange attended cremations and direct / unattended cremations.
What is direct cremation?
A simple cremation without family or friends attending the cremation itself. A memorial can be held separately if wished. Our current price is £1,300 subject to the Standardised Price List.
Can we visit our loved one?
Yes, where appropriate. Viewing is by appointment at our Chapel of Rest.
Do you have a Chapel of Rest?
Yes. Viewing during office hours is included at no additional charge on the Standardised Price List.
Can the funeral be non-religious?
Yes. Funerals can be religious, non-religious, or a blend of personal elements.
Can we use a celebrant?
Yes. We can help you arrange a celebrant or minister. Officiant fees are priced on request.
Can we choose music?
Yes. Music is a common personal choice and we will help coordinate what you would like.
Can we have flowers?
Yes. We can advise on floral tributes.
Can donations be collected instead of flowers?
Yes. Many families choose charitable donations in place of, or as well as, flowers.
How much does a funeral cost?
It depends on the arrangements. Our attended funeral director’s charges are £2,394; direct cremation is £1,300; traditional burial is from £4,500. See Funeral Costs for a full summary.
What are disbursements / third-party fees?
These are fees paid to others on your behalf, such as crematorium, cemetery or officiant charges. They are separate from funeral director charges.
What is included in the attended funeral price?
Legal and administrative arrangements, collection (within stated mileage during office hours), care at the Chapel of Rest, a wood-effect veneer coffin, office-hours viewing by appointment, and hearse transport within the stated mileage.
Can you help with an existing family grave?
Yes. We can advise on reopening an existing grave and related cemetery requirements.
Can we personalise the funeral?
Yes. We encourage funerals that reflect the individual’s life.
What happens to cremated remains?
Ashes are returned to the family. Collection of cremated remains is at no charge. Storage is also available at no charge per month if needed.
